As is tradition, the 20th Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival will open with a wine and popcorn reception in the Malco Lobby. Music by DJ Swift 720.
11:00PM-Foul Play Cabaret Performance (Malco 1)
This six-piece local Hot Springs burlesque troop has quickly developed a name and reputation for quality old-time burlesque with a modern flair. This event is open to “Exotic World and the Burlesque Revival” ticket-holders, and screens directly after the final film in Malco Theatre 1.

Saturday. Oct. 15
12:00PM- Documentary Filmmaking in Third World (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
This panel will discuss the obstacles and logistics to filming a documentary in a foreign, remote area. Panelists include Sylvia Caminer (Tanzania: A Friendship Journey), Lisa Cole (Lioness), Marcelo Bukin (Dreaming Nicaragua) and HSDFI Board Member, Teddy Reynolds.
4:00PM-Graffiti Art Workshop (Lower Level Parking Lot)
Little Rock graffiti artist, Jose Hernandez, will be on hand to demonstrate and discuss graffiti art techniques in this free hands-on workshop in the lower level of the Malco Parking Lot. This event is presented in conjunction with the film, Graffiti Fine Art, with director Jared Levy in-person.
10:30PM-Malco Theatre Celebration
Festival attendees are invited to remain in the Malco Theatre after-hours for music, entertainment and theatre tours. Entertainment by DJ Swift 720, CINEPLOSION and others.Malco Tours meet at 11pm and Midnight in the Malco Lobby.

Noon-Media and the Future of Documentary Panel (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
Documentary filmmaking is often on the forefront of technology, as projects may often require long recording formats or unusual filmmaking situations. Live media and performance is also sneaking its way into documentary film circles. This panel includes Bart Weiss (Dallas Video Fest Founder), Sam Green (The Weather Underground), Lisa Cole (Lioness) and Nick Carrao (Come On Down and Pick Me Up).
2:00PM-Final Cut X Workshop (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
The latest version of Final Cut video editing software has drawn mixed reviews from purists who prefer the previous version’s interface, and others who are adapting to its new capabilities. Bart Weiss, Dallas Video Fest Founder, will discuss and demonstrate the program.
6:00PM- Sam Green Retrospective (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
Visiting guest filmmaker, Sam Green, will be on-hand to present three of his acclaimed short films, Pie Fight ’69, World’s Largest Shopping Mall and The Universal Language.
Sam Green is best known for The Weather Underground, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2004, and his cutting-edge live performance documentary, Utopia in Four Movements.
9:00PM: BrauHaus After Party(801 Central Ave)
VIP Guests and Filmmakers enjoy complimentary appetizers at the BrauHaus, and 10% off food throughout the festival. This event is also open to the general public, with music by Little Rock singer-songwriter, Adam Faucet.

12:00PM: Philosophy of Filmmaking: The Learning Process of Television (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
Hot Springs’ native, Jonathan Kudabeck, will discuss his first film, Mineral Explorers- Columbia and the initial process of editing for television broadcast.
1:00PM: Finding Your Documentary Voice Workshop (Screening Rm. 823 Central)
University of Central Arkansas professor, Greg Brown, will be on had to discuss different documentary styles and methods for conveying a message or idea through documentary film. Topics such as financing, distribution and defining an audience will also be discussed. This workshop is ideal for beginning filmmakers, or those looking to perfect their craft.
9:00PM- Poet’s Loft Courtyard Reception (next to 211 Exchange Street)
VIP Pass Holders, Filmmakers and Special Guests are invited to the Poet’s Loft Courtyard (entrance behind Poet’s Loft on Exchange Street) for food and drink, plus music by The Itinerate Locals and Sleeping in the Aviary.

4:00PM- Screenwriting Seminar w/Larry Foley (Screening Rm. 823 Central)
Larry Foley, Professor of Journalism at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, will present a seminar on screenwriting practice for both beginners and professionals. Mr. Foley is also screening Bridge to War Eagle during the festival, and is perhaps best known as the writer and producer of The Buffalo Flows.

4:00PM- Basic Screen PrintingWorkshop (meet in Screening Rm. 823 Central)
This workshop is designed to instruct beginners on the art of screen-printing, primarily t-shirt prints. This is a hands-on workshop, and students will be able to print their own designs. Taught by Ace Cox and Derek Taylor. Sponsored by Southbound Design.

4:00PM- Advanced Screen Printing Workshop (meet in Screening Rm. 823 Central)
This workshop will elaborate on basic techniques taught in Wednesday’s Basic Screen Printing Workshop, and will allow students to make there own prints and experiment. Beginners that were not able to attend the first workshop are also welcome to attend. Taught by Ace Cox and Derek Taylor. Sponsored by Southbound Design.

Visiting filmmakers will be invited to share the stage for an informal introduction about themselves and their films. Thursday night gatherings have long been a favorite HSDFF tradition for visiting filmmakers. Taylor’s will be featuring a special exhibit of work by Winfred Rembert, featured in the documentary, “All Me: The Life and Times of Winfred Rembert.” Mr. Rembert and director, Vivian Ducat, will be in attendance.

3:00PM- John Frum and the Cargo Cult (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
This panel will discuss in detail the World Premiere film, John Frum, He Will Come. Numerous participants from the film will be in attendance, including director, David Guinan and key subject, Cevin Soling. The panel will also discuss the general idea of the “cargo cult” phenomenon and how it relates to global culture.
5:00PM- Ghosthunting Workshop (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
Larry Flaxman, Founder and President of ARPAST and Co-Founder of ParaExplorers, will present a workshop on ghosthunting philosophy and techniques. Participants in the panel will also be invited to a special “all access” tour of the Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute facilities.
9:00PM- WM3 & Independent For Governor After-Party (Maxine’s, 700 Central Ave.)
Following the special screening of Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, Maxine’s will host a concert featuring Brumley& Gardner, Bryan Frazier, First Baptist Chemical (w/Rod Bryan), Sad Daddy and Ginsu Wives. Free to Filmmakers/VIP.

The best documentaries can include a wide variety of medias, and often begin after the discovery of found footage or photographs. This panel will discuss the various ways a documentary can be shoot and edited, and how “found” media can affect the outcome. Panel includes guest filmmakers, Tony Gault and Elizabeth Henry, Hanna SawkaHamaguchi (Beyond Iconic), Lydia Moyer (Black Damp) and others.
2:00PM- Finding an Audience: Marketing and Distribution (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
This panel will discuss what to do once a documentary is finished, and how to find the right “niche” or audience. Panel includes Mark Birnbaum (Slant 45), Robert Philipson (T’ain’t Nobody’s Bizness), Jared Levy (Graffiti Fine Art), Will Hess (With Great Power: Stan Lee) and others.
4:00PM- DIY/Personal Documentary Filmmaking Workshop (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
Visiting Colorado-based filmmakers, Tony Gault and Elizabeth Henry, will discuss low-budget, personal, and experimental styles of documentary filmmaking. Both are award winning experimental documentary filmmakers and professors at the University of Denver.
6:00PM- Tony Gault& Elizabeth Henry Retrospective (Screening Rm, 823 Central)
Visiting Colorado-based filmmakers, Tony Gault and Elizabeth Henry, will present an assortment of their award-winning experimental documentary films. Filmmakers in-person.
7:00PM- Porterhouse Club Filmmakers’ Reception (709 Central Ave.)
VIP Pass-holders, filmmakers, and guests are invited to the Porterhouse Club for complimentary appetizers, a swanky atmosphere and cash bar.
